The
Andy Story
Once upon a time, in another dimension
that can only be reached by traveling by scrunchies, there lived
two best friends. The first was named Emilia and
she had back length brown hair and green eyes. The other was
Calamine who had shoulder length red hair and blue eyes. Emilia
also had a dragon named Azelmyth.
In the evenings in the clearing of the forest
where they lived they would build a fire and sit and sew scrunches
and tell stories. Now one day Emilia met Edmund, a boy her age
with a a dragon of his own named Iyingflay. The two fell deeply
in love and so Edmund came to travel with them and share their
fire at night and tell stories of his own around the fire. Calamine
tried hard to like Edmund but try as she might she was always
exceedingly jealous of both of the others. At Emilia for she
had someone to love her, something that Calamine did not have.
And at Edmund for taking her best friend away because, the way
she saw it, Emilia had never been the same since she had met
Edmund.
So one day she decided to take a walk in the
forest to try to think things out. On her walk she ran
into Andy. Andy had attended magic school with her and
though they had never been close friends, they knew each other
and had been known to stop and talk when they saw each other.
But today Calamine was busy fuming over her situation and didn't
even notice Andy when he landed as an eagle in front of her.
Quickly changing to a human Andy walked beside
her. After a little bit he tapped her on the shoulder and
said, "Hello? Are you awake? "
Calamine turned, startled, "Oh, it's
only you. Hey, Andy could I yell at you? It's not
your fault but I need to vent my troubled emotions."
"Oh, sure. I just wanted to say
hi, and you want to yell at me. Sure yell at me, but there
is a surcharge of $.50 or uno scrunchio."
"YOU IDIOT!!!!!!!! IT'S ALL NOT YOUR
FAULT!!! HOW DARE
YOU NOT DO THAT!!! IT'S ALL EDMUND'S FAULT!!!
HOW DARE
YOU NOT BE THE CAUSE OF ALL MY PROBLEMS!!!! HOW COU--"
"Thank you for coming to yelling at Andy
enterprises." Andy interrupted. "After the first twenty-one
exclamation marks there is an additional charge of another scrunchie.
Thank you, and please continue."
Calamine stood flabbergasted for about a minute.
Then picking up where she had left off, she continued her yelling.
"--COULD YOU NOT BE THE CAUSE OF ALL MY PROBLEMS!!!! HOW
COULD YOU NOT SAVE ME!!!!" Calamine stopped suddenly,
and collapsed into tears on Andy's shoulder.
Through all of this Andy had been wondering
just what Calamine's problem was. Who was Edmund and why was
it all his fault? Why does she need to yell? Why
is she covering my shoulder with tears? And if it's Edmund's fault
why is she yelling at me and not at him? He wondered.
After a little while Calamine calmed down.
Pulling out her scrunchy chain, Calamine asked, "How
many scrunchies do I owe you anyway? Two for yelling, and
how many for crying on your shoulder?" She was trying
not to burst into tears again.
Andy, realizing she was holding back tears,
said, "Well, for one scrunchy you still have five
minutes crying time. And, if you promise to answer my questions
about your yelling, you get two more extra."
Calamine repressed a smile and said, "You
drive a hard bargain Andy, but OK. I promise."
She immediately turned and burst into tears
on his shoulder. Andy didn't actually keep track of how
long she cried on his shoulder, while he wished that he could
do something, anything besides sit there and silently promising
her that she could cry on his shoulder anytime.
Calamine finally calmed down. She gave
Andy three scrunchies, a blue star scrunchy, a bubble scrunchy,
and a Black Watch Plaid scrunchy. Andy decided it was time
to ask what had been running through his head.
"So why is it all Edmund's fault? And
who is Edmund?"
Calamine decided to start at the beginning,
because starting from the middle would be confusing. So
she began to tell her tale, but was interrupted when suddenly
they heard a huge voice from the sky shouting "vbrim-the
newest hat brim, instead of your ordinary hat brim its shaped
like a v!!! yeah!!!! "
" What the heck was THAT' Calamine asked
flabbergasted.
" A commercial apparently," Replied
Andy. " so Edmund and Emilia fell in love... then what?"
" You mean you're just going to ignore
it?" Calamine had heard many strange things in her life
but commercials being shouted from the sky was something all
together new.
" Well I don't know..."
"Exactly, there's nothing I can do about
it so why worry about it?" Calamine looked baffled for a
moment and then decided that what he had said made a certain
amount of sense and decided to continue on with her tale.
Finally, two hours later, Calamine, slightly
calmer but 5 scrunchies poorer and Andy whose shirt was stained
with her tears but happy to be able to help Calamine feel better,
went their separate ways.
Just before she left, Calamine asked Andy
" Why do you want scrunchies anyway? Your hair is
too short to put them in."
Andy was surprised someone had actually
thought to ask him that question. "I can't tell you."
he replied
" Why not?" She countered.
" 'Cause..." He couldn't think of
a good reason for why he could not tell her but he just couldn't.
"'Cause I can't. Good-bye."
He said finally, he turned back into an eagle and flew off leaving
a very confused Calamine standing in the clearing.
Soon he was standing back on his front porch.
He walked very quietly into the house and removed the Bubble
scrunchy Calamine had given him. He stared at it for a moment
and suddenly began to use his magic on it. Suddenly he was standing
on a beach, the sand was blue and the sky a shade of light green.
He looked around at the deep purple and the bubbling blue-purple
ocean.
Wonderful craftsmanship, lots of imagination.
He thought. Hearing footsteps behind him he spun around and saw
an old man standing in front of the rocks.
"If you're done admiring the scenery,
would you mind if we got down to work?"

That evening, Emilia was surprised, Calamine
wasn't yelling at her or trying to find a reason for Edmund to
go away. For once she wasn't rolling her eyes every time she
saw the
couple looking at each other. Then again, she had been in deep
thought ever since she had returned from the forest that afternoon.
Calamine spent most of her time that evening
thinking about Andy. How nice he had been. He didn't
have to let me cry on his shoulder anymore if all he had wanted
was my scrunchies but he didn't seem to care that much. In fact
he seemed more than eager to let me cry it out.., She thought,
In fact, If I didn't know any better I'd say he actually cared.
No wait, that's impossible. Why would he care about me? There
are such prettier girls in the forest, lots more are more powerful
than I am. I'm no one, why would he want me? Calamine wished
that it was true though. She loved Andy, very much, but knew
he would never return her feelings.

Somehow, over the next few days Andy and
Calamine started spending more and more time with one another.
Soon he had begun sharing their fire with them and telling stories
of
his own. Each night before he left he would ask Calamine for
a scrunchy and each night she would give him one but ask why
he wanted them.
"I can't tell you, not yet at least."
he always replied
mysteriously.

One day, after wandering around in the
wood for a while, Andy found himself at Emilia's (and Edmund's)
and Calamine's clearing.
It was a Saturday and so, as usual they were
busily cleaning up the site. Unnoticed, Andy sat at the edge
for the clearing for some time watching Calamine as she shoveled
ashes from the fire circle, picked up dead branches and hung
her wash out to dry.
All right, that's it, I'm going to do it
this time. No chickening out. He thought to himself, took
three deep breaths and strode out towards Calamine.
It was cleaning day and so Calamine was doing
her chores and thinking about nothing in particular when Andy
suddenly strode into the clearing and right up to her. He stood
there for a moment as if he wanted to say something and couldn't
phrase it right. Finally he said:
"Calamine, can I borrow the scrunchy
you're wearing?"
Calamine was quite confused, that wasn't exactly
the kind of thing she had expected him to say, but since she
had no reason not to, she pulled her brown witch scrunchy from
her hair and handed it to him. He picked it up and stared at
it for a second before his eyes rolled back in his head and he
fell into a trance.
Inside the scrunchy, the back cats and crescent
moons that littered the cloth the scrunchy was made of floated
all around. Suddenly one of the cats spoke:
"What are you waiting for, just tell
her why don't you?", the cat asked.
"She would laugh at me." Andy said.
"How do you know, why don't you just
show her then?" said the cat pragmatically.
"Are you sure she won't think I'm a fool?",
worried Andy.
"Just do it. Now get out of my scrunchy
before I bite you!", the cat said and Andy cut off his magic.
Suddenly he was back in the clearing with
a very worried looking Calamine watching him very intently
" Are you okay?" She asked.
"Yes, I'm fine. Would you come with me
somewhere?" Andy asked suddenly.
"Yeah, but can it wait till I'm done
my chores?" said Calamine.
" No, it will only take a second. Here,
take my hand." Andy said as Calamine took his hand and with
his free hand he pulled out a plain brown scrunchy with little
brown- orange dots all over it. He began to work his scrunchy
magic on it and soon they both were in the world of the scrunchy.
All around them bouncing-basketball-heads
bounced around. As they bounced they mumbled:
"it's her, it's her, it's her"
Andy helped Calamine pick her way though the
mess to a large gray building that resembled an ancient Greek
temple. On the top, inscribed in big capital letters it said:
CALAMINE
She saw the inscription and then looked
at Andy. He answered her unspoken questions without hesitation:
"Yes, I have scrunchy magic. I can teach
you to use yours too. I've been studying with Fizban for years
now. This was my first scrunchy. I though this would show you
how I felt with out me actually having to say it." Calamine
stood there flabbergasted. Finally when she could finally
talk she said;
" Oh my gosh. I had no idea. I've always
loved you but I always thought you never cared."
" You mean you don't think I'm a Fool?"
Andy asked worriedly.
" Of course not, why would I?" Replied
Calamine.
Suddenly Andy brought them out of the scrunchy
and took Calamine in his arms. She turned to look at him and
they kissed.
Meanwhile through all of this, a flabbergasted
Emilia and Edmund had been watching. They hoped someone would
explain what had happened, someday.
Happily Ever After...?
